Posted - 08/05/2010 : 21:45:57 hi im toby,
im thinking of getting either brazilian rainbow boa OR a costa rican boa, i really can't decide, i LOVE the pattern on the rainbow but i LIKE the pattern on the costa rican and i prefer its head shape, what would you recommend?
Also i have a 32inch wide glass viv and what heat sources do i need, i already have a light fitted but i want a heat mat so that i can turn the light off at night, i would put the heat mat under the glass but even so, would this get too hot and burn the snake? and would i need a thermostat to prevent this?
The last question is about humidity. I have been to many reptile shops and the people there state that humidity is not a problem for rainbows or any boa as all they need is a moist hide with moss inside and then the rest of the viv can be dry, so in essence, the boa themselves can choose whether to hang about in the moist hide or in the whole viv itself so please will you give some insight on that?
your answers will help LOADS,
cheers, Toby. |

Posted - 02/06/2010 : 13:56:20 Hi I use a mixture of eco earth, eco bark and moss mixed up as a substrate and cover the cooler half of the viv with it and provide 2 moist hides and 2 dry hides with my rainbows. Re the non feeding - my young brb was a picky feeder - I increased the temps by just 1 degrees and she now feeds great and is always out when I am feeding wanting to feed, even when it is not her feed day. I feed all mine warm mice or rats and that seems to work better - my crb's will only take warm prey. My male caatinga will only eat mice (although took a rat first feed I had him) - he will now show no interest in rats but as soon as a mice is offered he strikes immeadiately. It's a bit of a pain as have to give him 2-3 XL mice rather than a Large rat weaner. |

Posted - 28/05/2010 : 10:41:46 the brazilian from mason exotics feeds great ! its the other one (columbian) that i got from a shop that isnt .i had to get A GRIP and do my own "BRAINING" of a pinkie , as everyone i asked to do it, said " do you think im mad !".did it with a dart as advised, and borrowed the hubbys pliers ( he would kill me if he knew what they were for , told him it was to tighten something up on my car !) waiting as i write this to see the outcome .although he did do a hell of alot of smelling of it , and showed more interest than previously. i dont know if i actually got the brain cavity ,as i imagined it would be "mush" but was really just like watery puss. is it so watery the brain , or did i not puncture the right bit ???? fingers crossed peeps ! |

Posted - 12/05/2010 : 20:09:20 ive been told with pure eco earth substrate you can house plants in your viv, springtails will colonise and clean poo and dirt i was just wondering, will it be safe just to plonk the plants in, will they have harmful parasites that will harm your snake on them? and what if the sprintails jump out in to my room?! ewww... someone give me some guidence! |
