Hi, I'm new to this sight and to rainbow boas. I recently purchased a Brazillian Rainbow Boa but don't pick him up until the 1st October. I need to get the viv set up ready for him, I have a rough idea as to what I need but I am open for suggestions.

Robbo, Incurable is correct: avoid heat rocks, and heat mats are fine *if* controlled and set up correctly.
I would not recommend two heat sources, simply due to the fact BRBs tend to like it cooler (which will be harder due to the two heat sources), and because that will double your cost. I also suspect that undertank heating (as opposed to a bulb on top) will help better with the humidity, as you can always rest the water bowl partly on top of the heat to promote evaporation.

Well, I am not an expert, and I've only had my BRB for less than a year. I get all of my advice from my breeder friend (he breeds all kinds of reptiles). He told me not to use a heat rock, because those do burn reptiles. He also said that having an under-tank heater would work best with that kind of setup.
I have heard of people using a heat emitter for BRBs with some success. The most important thing, I believe, is getting your stat and setting it up so that it controls the heat source (mat or emitter) so that it never gets hot enough to burn your reptile.
Maybe some other people can give you better advice. My suggestion would be to go ahead with the heat mat/stat setup if you are going to put your BRB in a tub/rub. As long as the temperature is controlled, it should not hurt your snake.  |

right im getting alot of mixed messages about heat mats the brb im getting is 5ft and ive bin told by some ppl that you dnt need a heat matt coz brbs tend to get burned even if the matts on the outside of the viv and a ceramic bulb on a stat wud b fine, but others have said i need both and both on stats.
im reli gettin confused ive sorted everything else but this is the most important thing and i reli need some advice |

You should always have some sort of way to control the heating, so that it doesn't get too hot on your hot side. High temperatures is are a major killer for BRBs....as they prefer it a little cooler than other Boa types. Accurite has some good ones and there are others out there (Zilla is what I use). Just make sure it has an actual probe to be placed on the substrate or under it...to take as accurate a reading as possible. Hope this helps and good luck with your BRB! |
