I work for a breeder and work with about 350 adult and about 450 babies of various ages. (BRB's) We have dumerils, ball pythons, bci's, rainbows, blood pythons and a couple of boelens. (These are the ones that I work with) Most of the rainbows are tempermental, all of the babies are nippy. I have to wear very thick rubber gloves (elbow length) when working with the adults.

But one caught my attention about 2 weeks ago. She was born in Dec '09, and was very ball-python like. Never nippy, and was "curious" like the boelen pythons are. She would know when I entered and be at the front of her cage to greet. She liked to curl up on my wrist and hang out with me while I worked in that particular baby room. Maybe she thinks she's a ball? :)

I brought her home with me Friday! I was going to get a ball python as I have picked up several hundred in a row and never any sign of aggression. For the most part you can't do that with the rainbows (of course these are not tame or handled regularly). It was so refreshing to find a rainbow that has such a docile personality. She's a sweetie.

I had never owned a snake before but as a kid I'd catch them if I could like every good boy does! I've only been working there a month but sure learned a lot in a short amount of time.

Anyway, decided to join this rainbow forum to be better informed and hear others experiences, etc.

Thanks,

Joe

I did the img code for the picasso ones, but the code was small letters not caps, like the cut and paste from photobucket does. I just inserted the url inside the img tags that the forum inserts for you if you say insert image. Wonder if anyone else has had luck doing the direct img with picassa (google) and not just photobucket?

Same as you Cliff can't see them.

Ok Cliff, here's one of the BCI, sorry for taking so long, it's not that great, it was done on a webcam :)
It worked fine, and he looks like a wonderful little fellow!

The others are unfortunately not coming up for me...anyone else?

I'm going to try a few more using picassa instead of photobucket. Here goes:

No helmet, you know these rainbows and bci's are hard headed! -).

I took the BCI outside with me yesterday, as it was 80+ out. The neighbors moved a mobile home across the street and I haven't seen one moved up close. He wrapped around my neck and stayed there for almost an hour sunnin and funnin, lol. And, I forgot to take any pictures! I'll do that today before I feed him and the rainbow this afternoon.

Hurray! Did he have to wear a helmet? ;-)

As for the boelens, I just looked. Nice color on those guys!

I brought him home today. They discounted it a lot due to his size and the fact I took extra care of him and they would have probably lost him if I hadn't. I need to get a photo of him. He's a super hypo bci so he has no black to speak of. Right now I want him to kind of settle in after the motorcycle ride, (yea both my rainbow and my bci got to ride home with me on the motorcycle from work, LOL).

I will see how he's acting tomorrow afternoon. For now he's going to get some hours to settle in.

Take care!

Joe

PS: On the topic of curiousness, and overall awesomeness, let me tell you, we have two boelens pythons, and they are the neatest things. I don't want to even think of the cost of one, but they are certainly two of my favorites!

If you haven't seen one, go check them out online. They are so curious and they'll twist their heads around, they like to look at you, they have neat faces. Very interesting snakes!

Yea, I did do that Cliff, and also mentioned he's less than 1/2 the size of his siblings. She forgot to get the price so he's gonna have to stay there for the weekend. That's ok, I'll feed him VERY well next week until I can get him :) lol.

And how did it go?

So, yesterday, I was checking my gravid's and lo and behold the first litter since I started was born. TWENTY ONE live babies this girl gave birth to, and one slug. Apparently this was the 2nd or 3rd largest litter they've ever had, at least in the last 3 or so years. It was her first litter.

I set her up a new cage, moved her and began to take count and move the newborns to their new cages. Most were together at one end, and they all perked up, all at once, it was like 13 (or so) little snakes all looking up at me ready to strike once I put my fingers down in there. I was thinking, geez, all I would have to do is just stick my hand in there I'd get at least 6 at once. Amazing how immediately after birth they are ready to bite anything that comes within distance!

Anyway all had all were completely healthy. I'll finally get to "husband" a litter now from birth until they sell.

Baby Brazilians are the same way -- and many say, more so. Congrats on the healthy large litter, and have fun with your “Snake Dad practice.” ;-)

I could not agree more. Every snake has a different outlook, and you can read hints from their many different behaviors, such as when they come out of their hide, how tightly they hold on to you when held, if they will sit still for pictures, how they prefer their food, etc. It amazes me more people don't catch and assemble these facts!

Thanks Martin. Yea, I have grown fond of many of them, even some of the really large bloods and bci's, which I was very afraid of when I first started. Having so many, and having such a very few make an impression (special impression) on me, I guess is kind of a blessing. I can tell you for sure, there are very distinct personalities to some snakes, even though many tell you there's no way. I see it every day.

Hiya

Sounds like you are doing and have a great job, would love to work in an environment like that although I think I would be getting too attached to the snakes and bringing them home

Keep up the good work and looking forward to more pics :-)

Martin
