Hello!
I am a veterinary student and am very interested in the exotics side of things and hope to pursue this further when I graduate - the amount we get taught especially about reptiles is very very little!
I have always wanted a snake and just before christmas I got a very lovely brb- he's about 7 months old or so and he's been getting on fine- great feeder, very good at being handled, has settled in to his viv really well, basically- exceeded all my expectations- he is wonderful!
However... I just wanted to ask some advice re. shedding- his first shed was fine, but he has shed again only this time he did not shed in one piece, I found several pieces around his viv. I got him out for an inspection and he has retained some skin on his head right at the tip of his nose and centrally just above his mouth. I've had a go at loosening it gently with a damp cotton wool bud and most of it has come off- am going to have another go- keeping him restrained with one hand is a little tricky! Basically- should I be worried that he didn't shed completely- does this happen from time to time? If not- am I getting something wrong husbandry wise? I keep him at 28C day, 22C night, I keep the humidity at about 80% or more, occassionally will drop below between sprays but I have also provided him with a moss box which is always filled with damp moss, 2 holes either side of it for ventilation.
Secondly any advice on how to get retained skin off would be greatly appreciated and also advice on restraining him, obviously he's not wildly keen on having his head poked with- I'm actaully very surprised he hasn't bitten me! I'm being as gentle as possible- he is still quite small and I don't want to hurt him by restraining him in order to get at his head- any tips on any of the above would be really really appreciated!! |

You did well! I was tied up all weekend and Monday with snake and storage errands (clearing space in my apartment for more vivs, lol). |

Mixxy, 95% of bad shed issues can be traced to insufficent humidity during shed. Watch the moisture levels during that time and you should be fine next go.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
In regards to the shed on his head i personally would pop him in the bath but make sure to check the temps of the water before putting him in and then let him have a little swim around in the bath for approx 5mins should do the trick then you will need to get a towel and take him out the bath and using the towel as an aid for him to explore through the towel should remove any retained shed.
Also would be good to check that the shed has come off his tail as this can be dangerous if not as can constrict his tail over a period of time and his tail will have no circlilation and will drop off  .
You can buy a product called Shed Ease from any reptile shop which will help with shedding problems.
Also in the viv its ideal to add things that will help him in aid of shedding i.e - Rocks , fake plants ect... will all help him loosen his shed i would also increase the humidity a little more during in shed and check the moss box is damp but not dripping wet , Hope this helps you.
