Hey  peeps , I need a little advise/input on a little project .

I have a young Brasilian Rainbow Boa coming in a few days time and I would like to have a real nice set up ready and waiting.

I have an Exo Terra viv , something like 2'6" long  x 2' x 2' , I'm pretty sure the bottom 3" section is watertight .

Considering that BRB's like pretty humid conditions I'm going to cover the mesh lid with something like perspex or something. I also intend to use  plantation soil  as substrate . I'm pretty confident of making a decent job of things set up wise but I was wondering about making use of the soil and putting some living plants in there. This is where I need some input/advice please.  I don't want anything toxic or poisonous or that's going to be an irritant obviously but I was thinking about some little wild flowers like daisies or clover or similar ??
My son suggested planting some grass seeds but I fancy a bit of colour and texture .
What do you folks think ??

Are there any little compact plants thatI could buy from a garden centre maybe ??

Another idea but probably too ambitious for me would be to build a little water section in at one end of the viv , you know gently sloping into a  couple inches of water ???  I'm thinking it's a step too far as I can't think how I'd keep the soil from slipping/sliding into the water .

Any suggestions or advice ?

LOL, if they put together the pictures, the planting soil, and the electricity draw, that could have led to quite the "inspection" visit! ;-)

Zico, I would keep it as simple as possible to start. Remember, everything you add has to be cleaned regularly, and a half-pond tank could make that very complicated! You can always upgrade later....

Yes I have decided to start small and comfy and go from there !

Thanks !!!!

Thanks

My BRB is about 2 and a half feet long and I think the RUB totals about 32 inches length+width, so he's already at the upper end of the housing scale for that size home. The 64 litre that he'll be moving to shortly is quite a bit bigger which he probably won't be too keen on, so I'll have to be sure to give him plenty of cover to keep him relaxed.

And yes flaboye, I'll post pics of his new home when I finish getting it ready for him.

I use cypress mulch. Yea, if you've already got a setup but with a screen top, just cover it. Whatever it takes to hold in the humidity. Inexpensive temp and humdity guages are available online or at any pet store. I think a neat little waterfall going into a bowl would look great, you could use an adjustable pond pump or something. Anyway good luck!

Congrats on your choice of a BRB !

Thanks for the feedback !

I actually agree that I may have set my sights a bit too high :)

Only used to Royals, Corns and Kings so this will be a bit of a challenge .

My second choice is Orchid ark as a substrate , I will do as you are and put the water bowl on the warm side and spray when required .

I think your over complicating it for now.

Exo Terras are not great for keeping humidity at at good level as they have screen tops and let out way too much heat and of course humidity.

I also started off with plantation soil and soon decided it was far too messy for me. It went everywhere and even her water dish would be full of the stuff not to mention everytime I wanted to get her out I had to dig her out of the soil and she was covered in it as was I!! Just usuing kitchen paper substrate in my setup works great and usuing the humid hide at the warm end and also her wate dish over the heatmat, humidity is great.

This is the setup I have for my yearling BRB, works great, she eats everytime, sheds perfectly in one whole bit and humidity holds at 80-89% with just a few sprays of the moss hide twice a week.
