Having finally given up on trying to maintain humidity in a 4.5x2x2ft wooden viv using a ceramic heater, I am thinking if investing in a Pro-cages viv,I will probably be looking at purchasing a 3ftx2ftx2ft.
However I'm wondering if anybody has experience with these, if so how do you heat them?
I know the ideal would be to use undertank heating in the form of a mat, I'm just a little concerned that the viv material is too thick & its insulating properties would make this difficult.
Procages do sell ceiling mounted radiator type heaters, although from the information I have found most Procage users are using these for Chrondros in a 2ft cube viv, Chondros as we know spend most of their time on a branch midway up the viv so these radiators appear to be used for providing a basking spot on that branch.
Is it plausible to use a heatmat inside the viv given the humidity/moisture levels that will be present? |

That sounds like it would work. Just mke sure the top panel is well-secured, as snakes are masters of getting into odd places. Please keep us posted on what you decide! |

I probably should have explained that I was thinking of a heat mat with a plexiglass/perspex panel raised slightly above the mat, to prevent direct contact/thermal blocking! Kind of like a slot that the mat would slide into (if that makes any sense, it does in my head)
I'll most likely use radiant heat panel though as I have a couple spare or will order one from pro-cages with the viv, although having tried one that I have in a 4x2x2 it struggled to create a hot spot of 26°c let alone any higher! |

Mez, I agree with Graeme: heat mats inside a viv are a bad idea.
Do they sell anyting like flexwatt in the UK? That's a solid undercage heating element. For topside heating, look for something like a radiant heat panel. Other than those suggestions...ask the company what they recommend for undercage options.

I wouldnt be using a mat for a rainbow, they can get to a good weight so not ideal to be sitting on a mat. |
