So we've brought our new baby (10 months old) BRB home and she's had a week to settle in and we're getting ready to feed her. My wife is totally against feeding live pinkie rats as she's been told it teaches the snake to strike at the handler. Has anyone experienced this?
Would people recommend purchasing pre-killed frozen mice/rats (appropriate size of course) or feeding live with the intent to switch to larger sedated (CO2) prey when she gets bigger?
Is it bad to start on pinkies & mix in pre-killed as she gets bigger?
What do others recommend for feedings for our baby? |

oh , happy days are here !!!! both snakes are feeding every time now , dont you just get so aprehensive when it comes to feeding time when youve got a non feeder.im so sad , im like a worrying parent. well , alls good now. happy bunny x |

yeyyyyyyyyy ! got my snake back off the shop. said he'd fed twice in two days !( fed him a 2nd time the day after, as notes werent written on his box!) tried to feed him .......bang ! struck ,and ate a treat ! so happy ! the skinny little fella finally eats ! hopefully this is the way forward and his eating reflex has come back . thanks to all you guys who offered info and tips on feeding etc. phewww ! |

apparently he fed yesterday at 3pm in the shop. then again today as the other member of staff didnt know hed already fed. fingers crossed he'll do it for me now ! SHALL I NOT HANDLE HIM WHEN HE COMES HOME FOR A WEEK OR 2 ? |

if they have him feeding on chicks, id stick with chicks but ive never used them so i wouldnt be able to advise you at all on using them |

ive taken my non feeding snake back to the shop where i got it. they said theyd tried it twice with no luck,and while i was on the phone it apparently went for and ate a chick. now this snake of mine is tiny. 12 " baby crb. would this size snake be able to eat a baby chick, as if i remember rightly, baby chicks are way bigger than a pinkie ???? and i was told they prefer chick to pinkie ???? so confused now. when i get him back does this mean ive got to carry on with chicks? or do i try live. cos 4 love nor money he wouldnt have a pinkie off me !! |

theres so many different variations of what to try . have a non feeder at the mo , crb. although my brb is a fantastic feeder. strikes when held up , takes gently from tongues , eats off floor. cant complain ! |

it also depends on the snake, i have some who will only eat heated prey and fed outside the viv, some will only eat in the dark some will strike some will eat later on the list is endless lol, my BRB has a verrrry strong feeding response and quite often splits the rat pups while shes thrashing about constricting and biting them..very messsy lol |

feed using tongs and i gentley heat my mice/rats using a cup of hot water |

agree with jono only use live if you have to, its much easier using pre killed prey |

my baby brb is 10 weeks old, he had first to feeds on live rat pups and now is as tame as and eats only pre killed. |

feed on frozen from your local pet store. get it on rats as soon as possible. try only to use live as a last resort. at ten months it should have been swithched to frozen by now..... |
