I just want to ask. should i place the thermometer probe on the statted mat or on the surface of the substrate. And should i position a hide on top or leave the area clear of objects.

Correct, substrate top is where you want it. One caution, however: if your substrate is diggable, keep in mind your BRB may borrow down into it...so make sure the floor of the viv, below the substrate top, is not so hot it can burn. |

Same here- place it on top of the substrate since this is where your snake spends the most time.  |

I have mine positioned on top of the substrate right over the heat mat. I also keep it clear of any hides or other stuff...that way I am getting an accurate reading on that particular area in his tub.  |
