Now that the BRBs and PRBs are classified as the same. How do you all feel about that? Would you ever breed them together? What do you think? |

I agree, Jeff Clark is awesome. Him and I are talking in regards to a couple of Peruvian Rainbow Boas right now and he has been nothing but helpful.
Also, LadySerpent, sometimes an easier way to do a scale count is from a good shed. Easier to count and not have to worry about it moving. Also, if you're not planning on keeping the skin you can use a Sharpie to mark in increments of 10 to keep track. |

You are correct on both counts: they typically seem more reddish, and scale counts are only sure way to tell. The biggest Peruvian authority I know is Jeff Clark; if you need more info, he's the guy to hit up. |

I believe PRBs are slightly more red than BRBs. I will take a pic in a few hours of the PRB... I believe the only way to tell is do a scale count and that's what I did with my PRB. Talk about a pain in the butt to do the counts. LOL |

I was originally looking into buying a Peruvian rather than a Rainbow.. They are slightly larger aren't they? Also slightly darker? LadySerpent, if you have any pics you could post of the PRB that'd be fantastic! |

I would not, LadySerpent. There are two strong reasons for this stance.
One, the reclassification that combined those subspecies was only recent, and the way the taxonomy game goes, it could change back again. But once you cross-breed, you can't "undo" such an action. As Peruvians are not too common compared to Brazilians, I worry the genetics could easily be lost.
Two, what happens with those babies? Whuile I'm sure you would be completely open and disclose the parentage, what will happen down the line when those babies are bred? Will the next breeders be so open and honest? And what about the generation after? At some point, they would be sold as pure Brazilians, when in fact they varry Peruvian blood as well. It really just opens up a whole can of lineage worms that a beautiful species does not need.
If it helps, last I heard Jeff Clark -- one of the biggest Peruvian guys out there -- was planning on keeping his own Peruvian lines separate, and he is well aware of the recent study. |
