Posted - 17/12/2012 : 22:27:22 For this entry, we are profiling Spessartine, one of two young females we are promoting to breeder status for next year.
Spessartine was born in August 2009. We named her, as with all Living Gems females, after a semiprecious gemstone.
Here is Spessartine as of December 2009, not long after she arrived at Living Gems:

For much of her first year with us, Spessartine was a confirmed mouse eater -- it was mice and mice only, or she would turn up her nose at the meal. It took many sessions of coaxing to turn her onto rats, which she now eats readily.
Here she is as of August 2012, on the occasion of her third birthday.

Spessartine currently weighs 1838 grams.
