It can be stressful but that's what I do. I work for a large breeder here in the US.
For my part, I take personal pride in the way the ones I take care of are treated. I can say we take everything very seriously and the snakes come first, over human comfort, fatigue, etc!

300 is just the adults. I also care for about 450 babies, from newborns through about 2 years when they are then moved to another area (adult area). Add that to the dumerils, the BCI's, the Red Tail boas, and the blood pythons, and I probably am responsible for 1,000 snakes, or very close to that. |

Well they forbid cell phones or cameras in the areas where the snakes are. BUT!
I just took 3 photos with my computer cam, they're not great but they're what they are. This weekend I'll take some better ones. I have one of my rainbow boa, one of the medium ball python, and one of the baby pastel ball python. (Yes, I brought home two ball pythons, they were free to a good home, and I had the cages, so I did it) :)
Let me see if I can figure out how to do it! |

We are located in North Central Florida. I'm not sure what their policy is concerning talking about them directly on a blog or forum. I will find out and let you know sam.

Hiper, we're not permitted to take cameras or cellphones back in the snake areas. I haven't questioned why, etc., but it's a rule. I do wish I could at lesat snap a photo of the rainbow room, the one that I am responsible for. We have about 8 people that work there, 7 of them work with the ball pythons. I believe we have about 7,000 of those. I know they do not sell to pet stores, but to those who sell to them.
I moved my brazilian into her new 75 gallon tank. It has a piece of driftwood, huge pool on one end, and a nice half/log hidey. For the first week she pretty much stayed hidden under the cypress mulch, the substrate I used.
Yesterday when I came home she was up on top of the hidey, and a little later was in her pool, so she's beginning to explore and feel safe in this huge tank. She also ate a weanling late last week and I am going to feed her another one tonight after work.
So far so good.
We had a little BCI boa that had trouble shedding and I took him from paper to cypress mulch about a month ago. I fed him extra, made sure he was well misted and even began to take him out and soak him a little.
He got to where he comes to the front of his cage when he hears my voice or smells me there, and wants to be held and misted by the hose. He loves being sprayed by the hose now.
Anyway yesterday morning I came in, he had shed PERFECTLY ! He has doubled his size and looks wonderful now. Skin is nice and hydrated and when I opened up his cage he came out and got on my hand then curled around my arm. I took him over and gave him his ritual "hose bath" and he didn't want to leave me.
I am afraid I might have to take him home with me. Bleh! We don't have too many BCI's but he's almost doggy like in his responses to me. I think he knows I helped him and wants to be near me. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but there's something there. He's a real sweetie.
Ok. Off to work!

Glad to hear your Brazilian girl is doing well, Joe. Lots of people argue small snakes do not do well in larger enclosures, but (as you just proved) they're fine so long as they have a secure spot to which to retreat.
Nice job with the BCI! If he's bonded to you, I'd acquire him if you can. 'COurse, at that point, pictures are required. ;-) |

I was a little nervous about putting her into a 75 gallon aquarium.
But yea, for about a week I never saw her, she was doing what rainbows do, hide under the substrate (or whereever) if they can lol. At least I know in my absence she's exploring and dipping in the water, etc. She's self regulating how she wants to feel, where she wants to be.
Cliff, that little BCI has definitely bonded to me. Yesterday I fed him a live hopper just to watch him do his thing. What an unbelievable turnaround. You can tell his mood is much better. He was a miserable sickly little thing all dried out looking. He is the only snake that just wants to be watered directly by the nozzle. I mean some of the rainbows which I felt were having a shed problem I'd' take extra time with direct misting on their bodies too, they would always pretty much want to slither away, but rainbows like to move around when being held anyway, but this little guy actually acts like a puppy dog having his belly rubbed.
Anyway, there it is, lol. I wonder if this is how Ross Allen began? :)
Can't take any photos of him at the facility but if I buy him and bring him home I'll surely post one. I just wish I had one from a month ago and one today so I could show the strides he's made.

Sounds like someone has their next purchase mapped out. ;-)
It's pretty unusual he likes direct watering. My Brazilians are split on it. Some don't care, some don't like it, and a few hate it -- the other day Galahad whirled around on me all ready to attack the nozzle when he was accidentally hit.
Again, *great* job! |

I was feeding the rainbows today, the adults, x-large mice. Frozen/thawed is what we give them since they are NOT fussy eaters thank goodness!
I dangled one in front of the BCI and he grabbed it and ate it! I think he's getting his appetite now where it should be. A live hopper the day before and an XLA mouse today, I am very pleased. He's about 1/2 the weight and size of his brother, so he's got a ways to go. I think he went at least a month without eating during his shed problem.
The BCI's are great eaters as well. Never a problem with thawed frozen. When I have leftovers I usually feed the bci's instead of throwing out or re-freezing anything.
I think when I bring him home he's gonna be a BCI who will get cypress mulch like my rainbow and be misted.
I asked them to give me the price today, so I'll prolly take him home Friday this week. One advantage for employees is we can get them wholesale or at cost which is basically a fraction of what they sell for in stores.
I'll keep ya posted, and take a pic of him when I get him home.
