Hi Tui, welcome to the forum! Congratulations on the new acquisition. Do you have any questions on setting up his/her new home, in order to test it before arrival day? |

Thank you all, i was afraid i would be ignored being the new one :)
Actually Snakesitter, thank you for the offer. I do have one question. I have had many suggestions regarding the humidity and how to keep it up.
Some say its best to spray water couple of times a day to the viv, some say the best is to keep wetbox in the viv all the time, so the snake can get the humidity when ever it wants.
I have come to the conclusion of using humidifier, its not designed for vivs, but i have heard that it is good at keeping the humidity where it should be. The humidifier is placed outside the viv and a "hose" is to be plazed on the nozzle where it sprays the mist, and the end of that hose would be inside the viv.
The reason i chose this method, is that i dont have to worry about forgetting to spray it myself, fear of incubating bacteria in the wetbox if its kept in the viv all the time (of course in blues) and im guessing the humidifier would keep stable humidity in the viv at all times, because it mists regularly. I have digital thermo/hygrometer for help, although many have said its useless once you get to know the snake and its requirements. But i want to be on the safe side, since this is my first tropical snake. I have 2 corns too.
So, what do you think is the best solution and have i selected the wrong one? Im guessing you have used/tried every way there is, so im sure youll be able to give me an answer :)
Also, i have no idea what size she is. She is 6 months old but i have never even seen one in real life so im really a noob :D Im a little troubled also about what size mice i should feed her. Or maybe rats, before its too late and she wont get used to eating them.. If you could maybe tell me what sized 6-month old brb's you have, so ill get some idea :) And in comparison too, maybe mine is too small, or maybe on the bigger side :)
Sorry if i just abused your kindness :) |

You have not abused my kindness at all. Help is what I’m here for. :-)
For your first question, getting and keeping a rainbow-friendly humidity level can be a challenge.
While I admire your inventiveness using a hose-linked humidifier, this may not be the best approach.
There are three reasons for my caution.
The first is temperature: many humidifiers push out heated air -- too hot for Brazilians and could kill/burn them -- or cold air -- too cold for Brazilians and could lead to a respiratory infection. Yours may not be a type that does this, but it never hurts to check.
The second is air exchange. In order to be able to take that much moist air into your viv, you're going to need to allow major venting/outflow. This means the temperature and humidity inside the viv will go up and down, up and down -- which is not a very stable environment for a snake that does best with limited ventilation.
The third is germs. Humidifiers are often breeding grounds for germs, and most manufacturers recommend regular treatment with chemicals to kill them. These germs -- or, worse, the chemicals -- would be vented directly into your viv. I suspect the amount of germs on a humid hide is less worrisome.
A humidifier could be useful, but I’d use it to stabilize the room outside his/her viv, and thus indirectly help with the inside levels.
The classics for inside the viv remain a large flat waterbowl, partly placed over the heat; a humidity-retaining substrate; and a moist hide as a last retreat. Some people supplement this with hand misting, and a few here have adopted an ultrasonic fogger. Ash is more of an expert on the last item than I.
For your second question, you should feed pre-killed rodents wherever possible, preferably frozen/thawed rats. Offer the baby a rodent as big around as he/she is at his/her largest point, about once every seven days. My six-month olds range from the high 40s to the low 70s (all in grams).
I hope this helps, and good luck-- |
