HI,
I'm new here and I have a few questions regarding temperature and what is safe. I'm glad to have found this forum. I got a baby BRB about a week ago. It's my first one, but I have a GTP so I'm familiar with the humidity involved in keeping these snakes and that they require a little cooler temps than GTPs. However my little guys is not cooperating. I am concerned because I am always finding him in the cold side of the tank. I have him in a 10 gallon glass tank and I have the screen top covered about 3/4 of the way with plastic to keep the humidity in. I have an undertank heater on one side and the temp is about 80-82 degrees there. The cold side seems to only be around 66 degrees, but he keeps going to that side. I keep moving him to the warm side and later I find him on the cold side again. He is moving around at night and he did eat for me already so I don't think he's too stressed. Are these cold temps bad for him? The humidity is always up over 80% so I think I'm good there. I always tell myself the snake knows what he needs, but I just feel like it's too cold there for him. I appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks so much. |

Hi Ivana, welcome to the forums! Is there any possibility that he could be seeking something *other* than temperature by going to that side? Is there more privacy? Less vibration? Better humidity? A temp of 66 will not kill him, but it is a little colder than I'd usually urge. BTW, just to screen out the possibility of a bad thermometer, have you confirmed those readings are correct with a different unit?
On another note, see if you can pump your humidity up over 90%...80% is fine for an adult, but a baby needs more.
Finally, I would also look into getting a non-glass enclosure for him, though it's not urgent. These snakes are not the best match to glass tanks.

HI Cliff,
Thanks for the advice. I have been checking the temp with a heat gun. I have another thermostat on order because I think I might be overloading the one I have. Its got three outlets and can handle 1000 watts, but it always seems they don't work the best when I have it running multiple tanks. Actually he seems to be staying on the warm side now. He's burrowed under the substrate under his hide over the heat pad, so I'm feeling a little better about things. I have a hide on the warm and cool side and a large water bowl in the middle that sits partially over the heat pad. I hope to transfer him to a plastic enclosure soon as I'm in the middle of upgrading all of my enclosures, but it's going to be a process that will take a little time.
