Hello everyone!

Some of you will know me from the corn snake forum and the rest of you have never seen me before.

Anyway, I've been lurking around this forum for a week or so and doing a LOT of reading because I'm getting a BRB. My bits from Surrey Pet Supplies arrived this morning and I've now set up the habitat and am monitoring readings. It's only been finished literally a few minutes and as of right now readings are... hold on... warm 29.7C, cold 19.9C (room temp) and humidity 86%. As far as I know these are just fine. Cool end could be a touch warmer maybe, but not much I can do with this setup.

I just want to check with those who know a lot more that this home is ok? Heat mat covering the rear 3rd length. Water bowl mostly over the heat. Orchid chips, warm hide, cool hide, humid hide on moss half over the heat, a log, a vine 'bridge' and a couple of fake plants. All in an 18 litre rub measuring about 17x15 inches. Here's a piccy and I'd appreciate any comments both positive and negative. Cheers!

Hey Pete, welcome to the forum and congrats on getting a BRB soon. Thank you for doing your homework and getting everything setup BEFORE bringing the new addition home.

The rub looks great. Good job with the hides and gradient. Others might disagree, but I don't think it's too big of a deal that you're slightly cool on your cool end. I figure if it's a tad too cool the snake will stay on the warm end. That being said, you are about 1C too cool. On your warm end, I wouldn't want it too much warmer than that at all. If it gets much warmer I'd look at increasing ventilation or backing off the heat mat just a tit-bit.

Your humidity looks good. You planning on getting a baby or how old of a snake? Babies to round about a year require a bit more humidity than older. 85% - 90% is ideal for babies. This can then decrease a bit for yearlings and older.

All in all, great job man. Some people find it extremely difficult to maintain proper levels with this breed, but you just showed that it can be accomplished very easy.

Cheers.

Like I said, it's JUST been set up so am still tweaking the stat and hoping things will stabilise soon, but right now it's 29.3/20.5/85%, so looking good. I might though end up covering half the air holes to help humidity, coz there are a fair few in there. But will keep monitoring and will hopefully be able to get my new baby at the weekend...

Cool. Your cool end even came up a bit. Good stuff, just keep an eye on it and adjust as needed, but sounds like you've pretty much got it already.

No probs. Thought it would help people to see if/where I'm going right or wrong.

It's been up and running now for coming up 3 hours and is now saying 29.5/21.1/86% so I'm over the moon with that. Def going shopping soon if those readings hold! But obviously 3 hours is nothing so a bit more monitoring yet.

That looks really nice :) I was so excited too about my brb-girl and decorated nicely, and well... it was a bit of a disappointment, because she just hides all the time, like usual, and only in the night she comes creeping out of her hide. But then im already asleep so i cant see that :D

But congrats! Its an exciting time :)

Piccies of the brb as soon as he/she arrives, right? :D

Welcome to the forum, Pete. As Jonathan said, good job doing your research and reading -- *and* setting up to test ahead of time! I have only two comments.

One, lower your hot end just a bit. I'd aim for 28.0, about a degree and a half below what you have. Temps above 29.5 can be fatal for these snakes, so your new arrival may not be comfortable at the current levels. (Also, you're basically leaving no room for error on the warm end if something causes a temp spike.)

Two, raise your humidity a few percent. It should be pretty easy to tape over a hole or two at a time til you get there. Babies need the higher levels to thrive.

Other than that, looks great!

You betcha! Should be good to go in the next day or 2. Readings seem to be stable so no reason not to go shopping now!

Cheers. I do appreciate the feedback.

I turned it down a fraction and covered some holes now. I only did it a few minutes ago but let me go check now...

Well it's been about 4 hours since I turned the stat down a touch and covered some holes. Let's go and check now...

Warm is 28.1 (having reached a high of 28.9 and low of 27.5). Cool end is 21.3 and humidity is 88%. If those readings are similar when I get up tomorrow, I'm going shopping.

Thanks for the help guys. Is much appreciated and look out for pics soon. Tomorrow I expect...

Awesome job. It takes some people weeks of tweeking to get it just right. In the meantime their new animal is having to go through all the tweeking too, but like we've complimented you on, you've done all this prior to purchasing your new animal.

I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of your newest addition after you've gotten him/her home and settled in.

Thanks for the compliments about my preparations. I just wanted to get things right. As they say, Prior Preparation Prevents Pi** Poor Performance!

Well, the readings held up well overnight and everything looks to be working well. So I'm off out in a short while. There's something I wanna go and get...

Can't wait! lol

Pics later.

He's a bit bigger than I was expecting to get so may need to upgrade his rub sooner rather than later! He'll be ok for a bit though...

Very happy daddy.
