Hi all you know i have been having problems with Mayhem refusing to feed and being assist fed well however i was supposed to resort to live feeding for this friday but my fianceé said to just try offer him a ratpup for this evening so we know 100% he is a problem feeder then resorting to live prey and guess what we waited until after sunset and dimmed the lights and got the f/t ratpup and poked a few holes in the head to draw out bits of the brain and we heatted the ratpup up so it was warmish , and then i offerd Mayhem it but he was extreamly intrested in it but didn't take it until after about 3 to 4 mins but i'm so happy that he has fed on his own and not needed to resort to live either i have snapped a few pics of tonight and when i have time i will try upload them to here.

If you feel you must feed more often, I would handle conservatively, as follows:
--Leave him at once per week for a month, just to make sure he's got the idea down, folowing the *exact* same tricks you've used
--Then tighten it to every six days for four more weeks
--Then and only then move to every five days

See how this keeps it gradual?

One final note: if you move up a size in prey, be careful to move the frequency back to weekly to let his system adjust.

Thank you i have noted all this down , I am going to upload some pics of both the boa's on wednesday or thursday and mayhem is in shedd right now so thats a sign he is growing

That he ate is good. However, be careful: rushing things, especially feeding, can nip a keeper in the butt.

Did you use any of the same tricks as last time?

Yes i used the feed after sun set , and i defrosted then blasted it over with hairdryer which heated it super nice then brained it then offerd it and he took it within 4 mins so was chuffed

I know i should have waited until the 22nd - 25th for Mayhems next feed but i got all excited and thought i will just try him and guess what he ate for me again but as usual he took a few mins for him to take it but he ate which is the main thing.

OK i will give him until the 22nd to 25th to have his next feed. Thank you to the both of you for support .

Yay! Congrats on Mayhem eating! That is wonderful news. Though I have not ever bred boas (even Rainbow ones), I do have to agree with everything that Snakesitter has said. I have read a TON of info on breeding boas and it is not the easiest thing! I would definitely make sure that your female and male are both of proper weight and size (again, Snakesitter's suggestions are spot on) before even attempting it.

That makes sense, I'll feed multiple smaller items too when I can't find the right size.

I'd go with three years and 1500+ grams.

Thank you Cliff for fast responce , However Bow was fed two ratpups due to not being able to get hold of rat fluffs around this area so thought well i will have to just feed her two ratpups until i can find an breeder that sells rat fluffs.

How old does the male have to be and what weight for breeding ?

Be *very* careful with aggressive feeding and Brazilians. While you can (usually) get away with it when they are younger, Brazilians are very slender snakes by build (thus their alternate name of the "slender boa"), and thus quite prone to obesity in captivity.

Moreover, there is good evidence that overfeeding, however well-intentioned, results in much (and tragically) shorter lifespans for animals.

The only time I've ever fed two food items, even to a youngster who is growing fast, is when I was using up smaller prey items. It's better to take it slow, steady, and healthy than to rush the process.

Generally, I would urge people to wait until a female is over three years old and over 2000 grams. I've seen it attempted -- sometimes successfully -- as young as 2.5 years/1500 grams, but it has a lower success rate, and I feel it is detrimental to an animal that would be better served devoting its energy to another year of growth. Males, of course, have lower needs, as they do not need to support young.
