hi, heat mats for larger snakes such as brbs can cause burns. my choice is ceramic bulb with a guard and thermostate. hope that helps. jono

I use mat's on all 3 of my snake's. My king and my royal are in 3 foot viv's and they have both. A nice warm ambient temp and a nice heat mat to lay on. My brb is in a rub, which itself is in a 3 foot viv. The rub is half on a heat mat and there is a ceremic heating the viv. But only slightly just to keep it at a constant temp. Around 22' in my case as that keeps the cool end of the rub around 26'. That's my personal setup. But it work for me.

my 3yr old female brb had minor burns on her ventrals from refusing to lay anywhere else other than a small heat mat that was on a stat. she had a couple of sheds within a mounth or so and is fine now. (the mat was also under a piece of wood). i have since put the mat under har water bowl which helps with the humidity and i use a ceramic heater on a stat with a buld gaurd. she seems very happy now.

i use mats on all my snakes small or large, but make sure you put the mat UNDER the viv/rub if you put the mat inside the viv this is how burns are caused as reptiles cannot feel the burning sensation we do when a burn occurs. Make sure as a golden rule all heat sources bulbs/mats/ceramics/ahs heaters are all on a stat and you will be fine.
