Since I got him, Osiris has been coming out of hiding at night to look around his home. I didn't see him Monday night but when I woke up on Tuesday I saw him wrapped around a branch half hidden in his hide.
Tuesday night I spent the night elsewhere, and my father said he checked around midnight and Ossi was fully hidden. I thought that was odd so this afternoon I just looked under the hide and he was certainly alive, he moved a little so I just put it back over him.
Since he feels safer with the lights off I stayed out of my room for a couple hours and he's still hiding? Is he okay? Do they normally do this? Since it's only 9 pm should I take the lights back off and wait a couple more hours? I was wondering if he just feels no need to be out, since all he does is try to find a space in the cage to squeeze through ^^ |

Totally normal behavior for a Brazilian baby, *especially* one that just arrived at a new home! Brazilians are secretive by nature, often coming out at dusk and dawn and exploring during the night. During those wanderings, their main hobby (as with all snakes!) is trying to find a hole through which to escape from the cage. So he's just being shy -- give for a week or so free from stress to settle in.
As for lighting, don't keep him 100% in the dark: try and give him a normal light cycle so his internal clock does not go screwy.
Hope this helps, |

Another week? I was hoping to be able to take him out by Saturday xD It's 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night, So when I'm in my room in the night I should just use a dim lamp? When I'm not home in the weeks in the night he would get a normal cycle via the windows. He was fed last Friday, should I give him a couple extra days after this Friday before feeding him again? |

How long did you give him after you got him, free from both handling and food, to settle in? I usually shoot for at least five to seven days. Then I feed, and then I wait another three days. If he's already eating though, and has been in his viv more than a week, disregard.
12 and 12 is fine. I have mine set to match the real sun cycle, meaning longer days in summer and shorter days in winter. If it's a regular thing, a dim lamp at night would be good, or just cover his viv.
One week between feedings is fine, assuming the prey is the correct size. At two years of age, drop it to once every other week. |

Sunday would be a week. I want to make sure he'd be hungry enough to eat the mouse when I offer it to him. |

Yeah, sounds like normal behavior to me. When I first brought Marius home, I didn't even see him for a whole week. He never came out of his cool side hide. Made me think that it was too warm for him, but every time I checked, it was where it was supposed to be. After that, I fed him and he took the pinky readily. After I gave him a few days to digest and relax, I finally started the handling. He was such a wonderful little guy and still is! I think if you have given him the week to settle, fed him and allowed him to digest, he should be ready to begin with you. Just try it slow, keep the handling times to about 10-15 minutes to begin with....just every day. The more he becomes comfortable with you, the longer you can keep him out and enjoy him. |

That's great news :D It was a big jump from seeing him extremely active nightly to not seeing him at all. I'll look around for an appropriate sized mouse and hopefully he will take it. I can't wait to start handling him. |

Sounds like a solid plan. Note he will probably dissappear again for a few days after being fed, so that he can digest. Again, totally normal. Good luck! |

I have a cloth I can cover his viv with, but it's orange not black. Though it does keep out the bright room light. Will this be fine? I peeked and it just looks a bit dim in there. |

The weight of the cloth is more important than the color. It should block all (or almost all) of the room light. Maybe a towel? |

Yeah, it's actually a large sheet of orange towel material that I was *supposed* to use to make a bear about 2 years ago lol. I was going to double it as a damp cloth in the day to keep the humidity up, but I don't know if that's a good idea because it got a kind of musty smell. Or can that not be avoided? |

Generally, any cloth that stays wet for long will develop that "special smell." Cost of doing business, I guess. LOL! ;-) |
