Hiya
Been thinking about the hides for my brb set up and wondering if an old container that chinese food is sold in will do for the damp moss box/hide, it measures 17cm long, 12cm wide and 4cm deep, ive bought one of the little chaps off as exotics so wanna make sure it will be fine size wise filled with spagnum moss ?
I notice looking at most vivs and explanations that most cut the hole in the top rather than the side is there any reason for this ?
Lastly for now  which side of the viv shall I put it in, got 2 hides one of them being the moss box which am going to cover with plants to make it more private and secure for him or should I use 2 hides and then the moss box as well ?

What is the food box made of? Usually, they are card coated with a thin glossy water resistant layer -- which is fine for short food runs, but may not last too long in a humid enviroment. As an additional concern, what food was in it, and can you make sure even the traces have washed out (more referring to leftover chemicals from hot peppers and such than physical food fragments)?
I prefer side cut.
It's possible to overdo hides. I'd go with two max, one moist and one dry. I only use one in my adult cages. I position it depending on the season: in the hot summer, the hide goes on the cool end; and in the cold winter, it goes on the toasty warm end.

I have used a new small plastic tub with a lid (like the take away food tubs but these are 5 for £1 in poundland!) I have cut a hole in the top then got rid of any rough edge with sandpaper. I will put moss in this and use as a dmap hide.
I am going with 2 hides. The one mentioned above and the other is a half log type hide so it's rough on the outside to aid shedding.
As you know, like you I am just starting with brbs so it's still trial and error :)

It's plastic Like Louise and brand new as I have a friend who owns a Chinese so no food been in it at all, so thinking of it as using 2 hides which side would you put the moss box on ?

Brand new? Score! Just make sure it's durable enough to stand up to that environment.
Which side for moss is your choice, but I'd take your queue from the snake: whichever side he prefers, keep it there. |
