I have just bought a baby BRB it was born 28/02/11, as it is still settling in I have yet to get it measured and on the scales, but I was wondering if the RUB that I have it in, for now, is large enough ? it is 14" long, 11" wide and 6" tall.

Also, I would like confirmation on the information I have collected is correct .... temps 70-86 F and also humidity 80+ (but the more the better) Mine is currently running at 91%, which I believe is good for a baby BRB.

I have orchid bark as a substrate, and moisture tub (sandwich box with hole in), and toilet roll, as an extra hide and a water bowl.

............ I will get some photo's up when the new addition is settled!

Thank you
Wendy

Hey Wendy, welcome to the forum and congrats on your new addition.

As for the RUB, that should work for now, but not long. Bigger, to a certain extent anyways, is better. You wouldn't want to put a hatchling in a huge tub, but a good rule of thumb is for the tub to be at least 2/3 the snake's length.

http://www.therainbowboa.co.uk/Brazilian_rainbow_boa_caresheet.htm is an excellent caresheet for BRB's. Word of caution, 86 is a bit too hot for him/her. I would try to bump that down by about 3-4 degrees. 70%-80% is good for BRB's, unless as is your case, they are babies. Then like you said, the more the better. More around the 90% mark is better for em until about a year old.

Sounds like you are doing good, just watch the hot side and turn it down just a notch. Looking forward to pics.

I agree with Jonathan, Wendy! The hot side is your most pressing concern: drop that down by three or four degrees right away; the other issues are less crucial (but still important).

Looking forward to pictures!

I got my first BRB last week and he is living in an 18 litre rub, which I think is about 17x15 inches. But he's 29" long so is already getting a bit big for it, so I'm going to prepare a 64 litre rub for him. It's obviously a fair bit bigger and quite a jump from his current home, so to help stop stressing him out I'll have to provide plenty of cover for him. There's plenty of height in a 64 litre so I've already installed a bamboo climbing frame and a vine to make use of it.

I'm not moving him just yet though. He's only been in his current house 5 days and then he'll be due a feed in a few days, so I'll keep him in there probably until the end of the month and then get the removal men in.

My readings have been holding very steady at about 28/22/87-90% which I'm obviously happy about. Hopefully his new home will hold up too. All that extra space may need a 2nd water bowl to help humidity though. It'll be up and running before the move anyway so will find out then.

Enjoy your baby. They are gorgeous snakes aren't they?

Thanks guys, have now dropped the temps, although I have to say, it had not reached that temp, so I am glad!

I checked the care-sheet, which really should be edited .....
"The ideal temperature for you snake's vivarium is a temperature gradient of 21-30°C (70-86°F)"

I found a site from the Royal Python forums, (as I also have one of these 'Alice' - along with my 3 corns, 'Mr S', 'Sid' and 'Eddie')

http://www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/

Which size hub would you guys suggest for my latest additions new 'pad' ?

Will try and get a few snap shots to share with you all.

Thanks again.

Well I think the general rule is when the snake gets as big as the length plus the width, it's time to move up. Not knowing the length of your snake it's hard to say what size you need because my BRB is 9 months old now, so not a tiddler. They also like to climb a bit, so a RUB with a bit of height would be a good idea.

My boy is at the top end of an 18 litre so maybe that would be suitable for yours? Think the next one down is a 12 litre which is probably the sort of size you have now. I didn't really want to jump from 18 to 64 but couldn't find anything suitable inbetween...

I have today bought a 50 litre RUB, which I thought I could pop my little ones current living quarters into and leave the lid open a little to see what it does, of cause I will also pack this out as to not frighten too much, I was just wondering where is best to put holes in the RUB, in the lid or on the sides .... or both! Thanks again

I use a soldering iron and melt through the 'dimples' on the corners. But I did that before I knew I was getting a BRB and have covered up 1 section now to help humidity a bit. Now got 75 holes instead of 100! Keeping it ventilated and humid at the same time can be a bit of a balancing act. RUBs don't have airtight lids anyway but I always try and add more ventilation.

If you don't have a soldering iron you can heat a screwdriver or skewer. Or you can drill. But I found that to be not as neat and you're left with sharper edges that need filing down.

Not a great photo, does not really show the colours, as yet no-name!

I weighed BRB baby and it was 53 grams, did not really like to mess around to try and measure it this time, but as you can see I have put the old RUB inside the new one and going to watch what happens, just keeping my eye on temps and humidity temps again now

Huh. Bit similar to mine, who is Baron Von Rockula! lol I usually refer to him as 'the baron'.

Named after the lead in the brilliant comedy/musical/pantomime 'Vampires Rock'.
